Don’t Get Stuck without a REAL ID
The May 7, 2025, REAL ID deadline is fast approaching! If you’re an outdoor adventurer, frequent traveler, or simply someone who flies domestically, this is something you need to be prepared for. Without a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or a valid passport, you won’t be able to board domestic flights, enter certain federal buildings, or access military bases.

I knew the deadline for a Real ID, May 7th, was approaching, but it seemed of little consequence to me since I have a passport. However, when I went to the DMV to renew my driver’s license last week the staff there changed my mind. I “converted” to a REAL ID. At this point you may still be wondering what is a Real ID and why would I need one?
Let’s explore why REAL ID is a game-changer for hikers, campers, and travelers alike.
What Is REAL ID & Who Needs One?
The short boring answer is that a real ID is a state-issued driver’s license but leveled up with a gold star on it (ie, meets federal security standards). Starting May 7th 2025, in less than 70 days from this writing, anyone 18 years of age or older wishing to fly domestically, enter a military base, or enter a federal facility that requires ID at the door will need either a U.S. passport or a Real ID.
I’ll explain the application process at the end.

Why Is REAL ID Important for Outdoor Enthusiasts?
For this I’m going to resort back to Leave No Trace principle #1. Plan ahead and prepare. Lots of things can go wrong in the backcountry or in the frontcountry when traveling to destination wilderness.
1. Hassle-Free Domestic Flights
If you frequently fly within the U.S. for hiking, backpacking, or camping trips, carrying a REAL ID is far more convenient than traveling with a bulky passport. Many outdoor travelers fly to their next adventure multiple times a year, making REAL ID a must-have.
2. Emergency Travel Made Easier
Unexpected situations arise—whether it’s an injury on the trail, a family emergency, or a sudden change in plans. Many thru-hikers (Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, or Continental Divide Trail) often need to leave the trail urgently. A REAL ID ensures you can board a last-minute domestic flight without worrying about passport requirements.
I will also make a parallel case for passports vs passport cards to get out of Canada. If you drove into Canada with only a Passport card and have an emergency that requires you to fly home suddenly, you will not be able to board a flight in Canada. That would require a passport.
3. Reduce weight and bulk.
A REAL ID serves as a lightweight backup if your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged while traveling. Whether you’re exploring U.S. national parks, road-tripping across states, or embarking on international adventures, carrying a REAL ID reduces bulk while ensuring you have a valid form of identification.

Whether in my neighborhood, wilderness, or even abroad, if I go for a run/ hike/ bike/ or paddle I always take these three things: drivers license, credit card, and health insurance card. If I can avoid it, I’d prefer to not bring the passport on short excursions.
For all excursions except the most ounce-counting I carry everything in a Chums Surfshort Wallet. It’s not waterproof but it is quick drying unlike traditional leather wallets. It is fairly slim and durable. It also has room for a few bills, coins, receipts, and can function as a small jewelry keeper because it has zippered pockets.

4. Water-Resistant & Durable
Since passports are designed for receiving ink stamps, the pages are not waterproof. If a passport is water-damaged, it could render the document illegible or the electronic chip unreadable. However, all state-issued driver’s licenses are made from a laminated material called Teslin, which makes them water-resistant and tear-proof.
Despite usually keeping my wallet in a ziplock on most trips, I can think of a handful of times where either I or my gear went swimming or was simply drenched from rainstorms. Eventually, water finds a way in.
5. No More Last-Minute Travel Hiccups
Imagine arriving at the airport for a spring break trip or an outdoor retreat only to realize you left your passport at home. With a REAL ID in your wallet, you won’t have to panic—TSA will still allow you to board your flight.
How to Get a REAL ID: Documents & Cost
I can only speak for the process as I experienced it in Pennsylvania but I can’t imagine it being much different elsewhere.
Required Documents:
- Proof of Identity (One of the following):
- Certified birth certificate or valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- Proof of Social Security Number (One of the following):
- Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, non-SSA-1099, or recent pay stub
- Two Proofs of Residency (One of the following):
- Utility bill, bank statement, vehicle registration, or auto insurance card
- Proof of Legal Name Changes (if applicable):
- Marriage certificate, court order, or adoption decree
Cost of REAL ID:
In Pennsylvania, the REAL ID upgrade costs an additional $70 on top of the standard license fee. However, the new ID is valid for eight years instead of four, making it a worthwhile long-term investment.
Is There a REAL ID Extension?
As of February 26, 2025, there is no official extension to the May 7, 2025 deadline. However, rumors suggest phased enforcement and possible grace periods for travelers. To avoid last-minute issues, it’s best to apply for a REAL ID as soon as possible.

Final Thoughts
For an additional $70 I turned my driver’s license renewal into a REAL ID. This process included the bonus that my REAL ID/DL is good for the next eight years instead of the usual four before the next renewal. After that, each ID renewal will only cost the standard renewal fee and no other additional fee to retain the status of REAL ID.
For outdoor adventurers, travelers, and frequent flyers, getting a REAL ID is a smart move. It’s lightweight, durable, and convenient, making it an excellent alternative to carrying a passport for domestic travel. Don’t wait until the last minute—secure your REAL ID before May 7, 2025, and travel with confidence!
